What does PFAS-free mean for a fondue set?

PFAS is a collective term for a large group of man-made substances. They are used in a wide range of products because they can withstand heat and repel water, grease and dirt. Some traditional non-stick coatings are manufactured using PFAS.

No PFAS are used in the production of a PFAS-free fondue set. The fondue pot itself does not contain PFAS either. For the fondue sets available on boska.com, this applies to the entire set, not just the pot. No PFAS are used when producing the non-stick coating, enamel or glaze either.

Ceramic non-stick coating, enamel or glaze?

These finishes create a smooth surface on the inside of the fondue pot. This helps prevent cheese fondue from sticking and makes the pot easier to clean. A ceramic non-stick coating helps prevent food from sticking. Enamel is a very dense, smooth glass coating applied to cast iron. Glaze is a similar layer applied to ceramic. How can you tell if a fondue set is PFAS-free?

First, check whether the product clearly states that the fondue set is PFAS-free. Keep in mind that PFOA-free does not mean the same thing. A product can be PFOA-free while still being manufactured using PFAS. PTFE also belongs to the PFAS group. PTFE is traditionally used for non-stick coatings, with PFAS used during production.

You should also check whether the PFAS-free claim applies only to the fondue pot or to the complete fondue set. Not clear? Ask the retailer or manufacturer for more information about the materials and finishes used.
